NOT A DROP TO DRINK

Robert F. Kennedy Speaks Up

March 11, 2007- “Water, Water everywhere but not a drop to drink...” How is this possible? It’s everywhere…or is it? That’s what the WaterWays 07’ project aims to find out, exactly how much water is left on earth and what’s going to happen when we run out but most importantly how to stop the depletion and preserve what we have. The University of North Texas will proudly be sponsoring this year’s conference; many people; philosophers, scientists, managers, artists, environmentalists and specialists will gather at The University of North Texas in Denton to try and solve this alarming problem during March 13 through March 15.

During the weeks before the conference there will be an artist, Daniel Bozhkov, working on his latest project; at the UNT Art building, a piece that will correspond with the Waterways Conference that aims to draw attention and awareness to people. This piece will be revealed in a ceremony during the Conference and will be open for the public to admire as well as two photography galleries and a film all about the beauty and simplicity of water.

The conference is organized by the Philosophy of Water, with prominent affiliates and diplomats backing this crucial conference. People like: Ramsawamy R. Iyer, the former Secretary of Water and Govt. of India, and John A. McLachlan, Director, Riversphere and the Katrina Environmental Research and Restoration Network. During the three day symposium, intelligent minds will come together and host intense lecture series, discussion panels and distinguished speakers including Water Keeper Alliance’s own, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The project aims to accomplish educating and helping people of today and future generations to preserve water by drawing on resources through the projects main focus, river basins, specifically the Mississippi River region and the Gangha-Brahmaputra-Meghna basin. Other lectures, hosted by prominent specialists and owners; Professor Kelly Alley, Richard Sparks and Richard Heinichen will focus on rainwater, its benefits, droughts, water conservation and specific regions that have been heavily hit with this depletion.

Already there are multiple foreign countries that are struggling to obtain water on a day to day basis. Some countries are having to resort to trucks driving a good distance and bringing water back by the gallons, while multi million bottling companies continue to collect, store and bottle this valuable commodity; selling it back to the U.S for outrageous prices and depriving these suffering people. We are running out of time, some day in the near future The U.S. could be on the verge of drying up and depleting all its available sources as well.

All panel discussions, films, exhibits and food is open and free to the public who are encouraged to come listen, learn and become aware about this troubling epidemic and how everyone can participate and do their part in providing your children and their children with water for many years to come. To pique your interest even more the Wednesday luncheon will be serving Indian food, so stop on by the Environmental Science Building (ESSAT); grab a plate of hot and spicy curry and enjoy!
