Untold story

Interestingly enough, I stumbled upon this story when I was combing through the Star Telegram archives online. There was a story that talked about how the rate of Latino workers had increased in Texas but the general number of deaths had decreased. Within the article they identified with a recent death, Cornelio Salvador Moreno, who was killed this month when the tunnel he was in collapsed. What caught my attention though was there were no specific date; just his name, age, ethnic identification and the company he had worked for. http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_action=doc&p_docid=118BCE94A8C2A1A0&p_docnum=7
I was curious and decided to go to the online to a Houston local paper and see if I could find out anymore information. Here is where I became even more confused because the article I found was short and choppy with just the bare essentials and a comment or two from Sgt. J. Trump who was searching for the missing drowned man and a relative, Sonia Rodriguez. There was no comment from the North Harris County Regional Water Authority. http://www.click2houston.com/newsarchive/11517544/detail.html I went to their main site as well and combed their website looking for an article about the man’s death, or an action report and found nothing. I even typed his full name into the search box, but again came up empty handed, their website is out of date with the archives going back only to October 2003 with the most recent news pertaining about Pricing policy guidelines, the rising cost of water and pump free; but even those were dated all the way back to 11-15-2006.
Surprisingly the news coverage vs. the organizational response was far and few. There were 3 almost near consecutive articles talking about the missing and drowned man, and then a final article when he was found. During all these articles however, there was no comment from the organization. The words the media used to describe this accident were very informal; death, drowned, body, died. Through each article there was heavy repetition and a tonal of clipped finality. The articles were short and bare, almost as if they didn’t really want to dwell on the matter. http://www.click2houston.com/news/11512699/detail.html Even though I am unable to answer all the questions due to the fact I couldn’t find a response from North Harris County Regional Water Authority, I still used this as my article because I consider this a major flaw: a great example of how the media could take this story and run with it because the organization didn’t respond. In the Startelegram, Cornelio was specifically mentioned as one of the many Latino’s who has died this year. From the lack of response of the organization it can easily be concluded, though may not be true that it looks like the organization doesn’t care about its workers; especially Latinos. In the article it specifically mentioned that he was of Mexican heritage and it had been his first day on the job. Professor Lambiase pointed out an incident at one of her places of business how a person drowned, a civilian and all the things she did; press release and media coverage, condolence etc. to patch up that crisis. It looks like this company did nothing, the only source about this whole incident was from the newspaper articles and even at the very end they finally tacked on who the crew was working for. Since there is no organizational response or one that I could find, many false conclusions could be drawn by the public and do damage to the North Harris County Regional Water Authority and there are still many gaps to be filled: How did this happen? What are they doing to prevent it from happening again? Have they stopped work for now or have continued?

Grassroots vs. Astroturf

GRASSROOTS VS. ASTROTURF

Is it or isn’t it?

The Rainforest Action Network (RAN) was founded by Randall “Hurricane” Hayes in 1987. It is an operation that “campaigns for the forests, their inhabitants and the natural systems that sustain life by transforming the global marketplace through grassroots organizing, education and non-violent direct action.” (ran.org).

Given the two defintiions of what astroturf is and what grassroots is I found this group to stem from a grassroots organization. Grassroots claims it is a group of people that take “collective action on their own behalf” (wikipedia.org). Grassroots organizations as opposed to astroturf use a direct approach by using people who activley are protesting something. “Astroturfing is similar in practice of the grassroots movement, except that those behind it, the lobbyists, hide their agenda by appearing as specific individuals voicing their opinions.” (wikipedia.org).

The grassroots characteristics this group demonstrates is that even through the hounding of companies, civil disobedience and vigorous protests the organization clearly puts strong emphasis on education, projects and public awareness. The organization is also composed of actual members and activist from scientist, professors to citizens and students and many others. All these people have one concern and that is for the environment, the money and support they receive is all entrusted into several of their causes, they are true believers.

RAN currently is being investigated regarding the decision on wether they should be tax exempt, due to its gracious funding and large corporation size almost leans toward astroturfing however, the group continues to conduct truthful protests. It has however, become notoriously known for extreme negative campaigns, boycotts, and protests againts many corporations or anything that is considered threatening to the environment. A good example of this is “during its campaign against Home Depot, RAN organized a day of “ethical shoplifting” during which activists stole lumber from Home Depot, which they later handed over to the FBI.” (discoverthenetworks.org). Their reputation of such stunts almost leads one to conclude that they are in fact an Astroturf, however, there are no benefits for them or ulterior motives, any stunts they have pulled have all stemmed from the desire to protect the environment.

NOT A DROP TO DRINK

Robert F. Kennedy Speaks Up

March 11, 2007- “Water, Water everywhere but not a drop to drink...” How is this possible? It’s everywhere…or is it? That’s what the WaterWays 07’ project aims to find out, exactly how much water is left on earth and what’s going to happen when we run out but most importantly how to stop the depletion and preserve what we have. The University of North Texas will proudly be sponsoring this year’s conference; many people; philosophers, scientists, managers, artists, environmentalists and specialists will gather at The University of North Texas in Denton to try and solve this alarming problem during March 13 through March 15.

During the weeks before the conference there will be an artist, Daniel Bozhkov, working on his latest project; at the UNT Art building, a piece that will correspond with the Waterways Conference that aims to draw attention and awareness to people. This piece will be revealed in a ceremony during the Conference and will be open for the public to admire as well as two photography galleries and a film all about the beauty and simplicity of water.

The conference is organized by the Philosophy of Water, with prominent affiliates and diplomats backing this crucial conference. People like: Ramsawamy R. Iyer, the former Secretary of Water and Govt. of India, and John A. McLachlan, Director, Riversphere and the Katrina Environmental Research and Restoration Network. During the three day symposium, intelligent minds will come together and host intense lecture series, discussion panels and distinguished speakers including Water Keeper Alliance’s own, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The project aims to accomplish educating and helping people of today and future generations to preserve water by drawing on resources through the projects main focus, river basins, specifically the Mississippi River region and the Gangha-Brahmaputra-Meghna basin. Other lectures, hosted by prominent specialists and owners; Professor Kelly Alley, Richard Sparks and Richard Heinichen will focus on rainwater, its benefits, droughts, water conservation and specific regions that have been heavily hit with this depletion.

Already there are multiple foreign countries that are struggling to obtain water on a day to day basis. Some countries are having to resort to trucks driving a good distance and bringing water back by the gallons, while multi million bottling companies continue to collect, store and bottle this valuable commodity; selling it back to the U.S for outrageous prices and depriving these suffering people. We are running out of time, some day in the near future The U.S. could be on the verge of drying up and depleting all its available sources as well.

All panel discussions, films, exhibits and food is open and free to the public who are encouraged to come listen, learn and become aware about this troubling epidemic and how everyone can participate and do their part in providing your children and their children with water for many years to come. To pique your interest even more the Wednesday luncheon will be serving Indian food, so stop on by the Environmental Science Building (ESSAT); grab a plate of hot and spicy curry and enjoy!
